Wins for two Limerick sides in Wednesday's Munster Schools Boys' Junior Cup action

FOUR Limerick sides were involved in Munster Schools Boys Junior Cup action on Wednesday afternoon.

St Munchin's College booked their place in the last four stage of the competition after securing an impressive 25-7 semi-final qualifier win over Rockwell College at Multiflow Park, St Mary's RFC grounds at Grove Island this Wednesday afternoon.

St Munchin's, who outscored their Tipperary opponents by four tries to one, led the contest 10-0 at half-time and were in control of the game through the second half.

Cian Angley crashed over in the 18th minute for St Munchin's opening try. Jack Goode added the conversion and two penalty goals before Oscar Madden created the opening for centre Dara Giltinane to dot down in the 42nd minute. 

A second Anglery try, converted by Goode put the Corbally side 25-0 to the good with just over two minutes remaining.

Rockwell's try arrived in the final moments of the game through Ethan Kendrick with Jack Landy landing the conversion.

Meanwhile, Crescent College Comprehensive edged past local rivals Árdscoil Rís 20-15 in their quarter-final eliminator at Liam Fitzgerald Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The sides shared six tries evenly in a keenly-contested fixture. 

The result sees Crescent advance to the quarter-finals of the Munster Schools Boys' Junior Cup, while Árdscoil Rís bow out of the competition.

In another quarter-final eliminator, this time on Leeside, Castletroy College suffered a 27-14 defeat to Presentation Brothers College (PBC), of Cork, at Virgin Media Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Castletroy, who had defeated Glenstal in the previous round, were outscored four tries to two by a Pres' side which held a slender 10-7 lead at half-time. 

After falling 0-7 in arrears, Castletroy College hit back when Jerry Prendergast touched down in the 25th minute. Scrum half Aaron Fitzgerald added the extras to tie the scores.

Pres' three point half-time lead became six points with a penalty goal early in the second half. 

Tries for the Cork side from Noah White and Bobby O’Leary, both of which were converted, had Pres' 27-7 in front.

Castletroy, to their credit, fought bravely throughout and their endeavour was rewarded as Prendergast dotted down for a second tiem in the game, with Fitzgerald adding the extras.

Meanwhile, the pairings have been confirmed for the upcoming Pinergy Munster Schools Boys Senior Cup quarter-finals.

Castletroy College will face Bandon Grammar School in the first quarter-final pairing.

Castletroy College kicked off their knockout stages by defeating fellow Limerick side Ardscoil Rís in the opening round with a final score of 21-33.

They then went on to stage the mother of all comebacks, beating Rockwell College by just three points in their Quarter Final Eliminator which ended 19-22.

Bandon booked their spot in the quarter-finals after being defeated by Cork’s Presentation Brothers College 41-5 in the semi-final qualifier in Virgin Media Park last week.

Castletroy will meet Bandon in the quarter-finals at Virgin Media Park in Cork on Tuesday, February 10, with the kick off time to be confirmed shortly.

Meanwhile, Crescent College Comprehensive will lock horns with last year’s champions Christian Brothers College in the second quarter-final of the week.

Crescent had to work for their quarter-final spot as they finished their original semi-final qualifier fixture all square at 19 points a piece with St Munchin's College.

The replay saw St. Munchins take the victory in the end after an end-to-end clash in Fitzgerald Park on Tuesday.

CBC saw their way into the quarter-inal after defeating Glenstal Abbey in their quarter-final eliminator by a single point in Virgin Media Park.

The second quarter-final will kick off in Thomond Park on Wednesday, February 11 at 2:15pm.
