IT WAS Happy Mick Mackey Day - as well as Happy St Patrick’s Day in Castleconnell - as Ahane GAA honoured the greatest hurler of all time.
Current club legends and five-time All-Ireland winning Limerick hurlers Tom and Dan Morrissey marched in front of a 15 foot tall paper maché reincarnation of Mick Mackey during the parade on Tuesday.
Ahane GAA, Ahane Camogie and Ahane LGFA worked with Lumen Street Theatre on the unique float for weeks, complete with 50 paper maché sliothars, footballs and a massive pot for their spuds as a nod to the famous phrase ‘C'mon Ahane the Spuds are Boiling’.
As well as a giant paper maché of Mick Mackey they created a half hurler and half camogie player.
Club PRO Emer Kenny said the unique float was designed to celebrate the club’s 100th anniversary with more events planned during 2026.
“Ahane GAA, Camogie and LGFA Clubs, with the help of Lumen, have been working very hard to create the float. They have put in days and nights of paper maché and painting to make sure everything was perfect for today,” said Emer.

Led by their vice presidents John Meskell Snr and Louie Quirke, the huge Ahane crowd walked proudly around Castleconnell village.
“Our victorious Premier Junior A Football team, our East Senior Hurling League Winners and adult players from the GAA, Camogie and LGFA Clubs walked in the parade, beside the up and coming underage players from all three clubs!
“Our All Stars and heroes Dan and Tom Morrissey walked with two young players beside them, unbelievable role models for those players coming up in our club,” said Emer
She said the day was topped off with Ahane GAA, Camogie and LGFA Clubs winning the most entertaining float in the parade.
