LIMERICK’S former All-Ireland U21 hurling championship winning manager Pat Donnelly has stepped down as manager of Limerick’s Underage Hurling Academy.
The South Liberties man has given over a decade to helping nurture Limerick’s young talent.
As well as varying academy roles, Donnelly is a former county minor selector and then manager and also a former U21 selector and then manager.
In 2017 he guided Limerick to an All-Ireland U21 title - a team containing Sean Finn, Kyle Hayes, Tom Morrissey, Barry Nash, Cian Lynch, Aaron Gillane and Peter Casey, among others who have progressed to win All-Ireland SHC medals.
Donnelly’s departure was confirmed at the Annual Convention by Limerick GAA secretary Mike O’Riordan.
“A huge word of thanks to Pat Donnell who steps down from his role as the academy lead this year,” oultined O’Riordan.
“Pat has given sterling service to Limerick over the past number of years and will be a hard act to follow.”
2017 Limerick minor hurling manager John Mulqueen is to replace Donnelly in the academy role.
“There are a number of structural changes in the academy for the 2025 season with a focus on aligning all the teams with the same metrics,” outlined County Board secretary O’Riordan.
“We wish John Mulqueen the very best as he takes over from Pat”.
As well as assisting with varying age groups in the academy system, Mulqueen has coached at club level in Limerick and Kerry.
