A MOTORIST in Limerick was caught speeding 65km/h over the limit during the Easter bank holiday weekend.

From 7am, Thursday April 17 until 7am this Tuesday, an extensive Garda Roads Policing Operation was in place across the country, with 2,800 drivers detected for speeding offences. 

One of those was a motorist doing 165km/h in a 100km/h on N18, Ballinacurra Weston.

There were three fatalities on Irish roads during the same period, one of those being in Ardagh, Co Limerick, where a motorcyclist collided with a car at the intersection of R521 and R523 on Monday, April 21, shortly after 6pm.

The motorcyclist, a male aged in his 20s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The male driver of the car was transferred to University Hospital Kerry for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Gardaí continue to appeal for witnesses of this fatal collision. 

Additionally, 11 other serious collisions took place across the country that resulted in 12 people receiving life-threatening injuries.

An Garda Síochána carried out more than 912 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints over the bank holiday weekend, which led to 149 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Fixed charge offences for other road offences during this period included 225 for use of mobile phones, over 160 unaccompanied learner drivers and 73 no seatbelts.

109 vehicles were seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied, while 438 vehicles were seized for having no tax or insurance.

"An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear your seatbelt and keep your eyes always on the road," a spokesperson said.
