TWO COUNTY Limerick residents were acknowledged for making the move to sustainable transport to access their daily engagement in St Joseph’s Foundation Adult Services.

Frances Kennelly from the St Joseph’s Foundation in Kilmallock and Noel Lynch from the Dromcollogher Hub were both awarded at the St Joseph’s Foundation Sustainable Travel Champion Awards 2022.

The awards took place on Friday, December 9, 2022 at St Joseph’s Foundation, Charleville and were sponsored by Bus Éireann.

St Joseph’s Foundation provides services and supports to children and adults with special needs.

The event was organised by the Green Committee to celebrate the achievements of individuals who have made the move to sustainable transport modes like public transport or walking as a means to access their daily engagement in St Joseph’s Foundation Adult Services.

Speaking at the Sustainable Travel Champion Awards Green Coordinator Mary Hayes (St Joseph’s Foundation Charleville) said: “We started working on becoming a Green Centre in 2005. The first theme that we worked on was Litter and Waste and we achieved 'Green Flag' status in 2007.

“Since then we have worked on energy conservation, water conservation, sustainable transport and biodiversity and revisited those areas under the Global Citizenship Theme.

“The centre is now 16 years in the programme and has achieved eight Green Flags for excellence in the field of environmental education and management,” Ms Hayes said.

The event was attended by Local Link which is a key service for St Joseph’s hubs in rural areas. Sarah Moore, Manager of Day Services highlighted that “Local Link has been a fantastic resource for us and the level of attention and care that their drivers show the [St Joseph’s] service users is second to none ”.

Green-Schools Travel Officer Ellen O Sullivan (An Taisce) also commented: “St. Joseph’s Foundation are an inspiring organisation, a leading example for adult education centres nationwide. The dedication of staff to support service users in the realisation of service users' travel goals highlights the heart of this organisation. The Green committee continue to push boundaries with a view to a better future.”
