LDL PREMIER DIVISION

Athlunkard Villa 2 Fairview Rangers 3

CHAMPIONS Fairview Rgs staged a dramatic comeback to take the three points on offer in their league encounter with Athlunkard Villa on Sunday.

It was a heartbreaking outcome for Villa, who were on the verge of their first Premier League win, only to be pipped at the post.

The home side showed huge courage and skill to keep Fairview at bay and after taking a two-goal lead had Fairview in panic mode for a good stretch until they regained their composure.

Fairview dominated possession in the opening half but seemed to run out of ideas when they entered the danger zone and rarely threatened the Villa goal.

On a breakaway midway through the half, Famara Kassana forced a superb save from Josh McCarthy, tipping the ball over the top.

The Villa striker broke the deadlock on the verge of half time, cleverly running onto Shane Cope’s free kick to volley the ball across goal into the far corner of the net.

On the resumption, Fairview’s expected response did not materialise and it was the home side who upped the tempo.

Omar Darboe’s simple through ball caught the View defence ball watching as Kassana raced through to double the lead.

Kassana had a chance to complete his hat trick but seemed to stumble when clean through and minutes later a superb passing move ended with Darboe breaking clear but he was denied by the feet of Josh McCarthy.

The ‘keeper made another fine block to keep out Lorcan Feeney’s well hit volley and a shock result was looking a real possibility.

However, the Champions played their way back into the tie and got their reward on 73 minutes.

Oleg Vysochan’s corner kick was headed off the crossbar by Brian Aherne and Tomas O’Connor blasted in the rebound. It took just three more minutes to level up the tie when Brian Aherne headed in from close range from a Jake Dillon cross.

With the tails now up, the visitors went in search of the winner and stout defending looked like it might payoff until the 86 minute when a goalmouth scramble saw Gbadebo Habideen work the ball to Darragh Rainsford who curled the ball into the top corner for the winning goal.
