WATCH: St Munchin's College coach Andrew O'Byrne: "Sport doesn't do fairytale endings"

St Munchin's lost out to PBC in Wednesday's Pinergy Munster Schools Senior Cup final in Cork

ST MUNCHIN'S bid for a sixth Pinergy Munster Schools Senior Cup title was dashed by an impressive Presentation Brothers College (PBC) side in their final clash at Virgin Media Park in Cork on Wednesday afternoon.

PBC, who had beaten local rivals CBC 54-0 in their semi-final, were in equally impressive form in the final when easing past their gallant St Munchin's College opponents 51-3 to claim the title for a 33rd time.

Afterwards St Munchin's College head coach Andrew O'Byrne said: “It was a very tough one.

“We knew that could be the case coming into the game, we were fully aware that they are a class side - as their coaches said, they are a special group.

“Slightly disappointed we didn’t give a better account of ourselves on the day, but sport doesn’t do fairytale endings.”

St Munchin's scored the first points in the final, with Oisin Madden kicking an early penalty. However, the Cork side who won the NextGen Global Schools Challenge Premier Rugby Series in Spain, before Christmas responded emphatically to take control of the final.

O'Byrne added: “We gifted them a couple of scores, they were very clinical.

“They took their opportunities. (We had) an excellent first 10 minutes, a poor next 10 minutes and the damage was done by half-time, unfortunately.

“We knew it was going to be a huge ask.

“Obviously we are very disappointed and there’s a lot of very disappointed lads in the dressing room, but they can be proud. From where they came from at the start of the year to a Senior Cup final is no poor achievement.”
