MUNSTER YOUTH CUP FINAL
College Corinthians 3 Pike Rovers 1
PIKE Rvs, Youth Premier League champions, suffered the heartbreak of Munster Youth Cup final defeat on Sunday when they fell 3-1 to College Corinthians in Turners Cross.
The Cork side went ahead in the opening five minutes when a loose pass in midfield was intercepted and Padraig McGrath struck home from close range.
Finn Morrison almost had Pike level within minutes as his first time shot from Jack Croke’s cross just narrowly missed.
Minutes later Morrison made amends when he headed home Aaron Cusack’s cross.
Both sides had decent chances to take the lead throughout the first half but both keepers’ performed well when called upon.
After the restart, disaster struck for Pike as the Cork side broke down a Pike attack and a quick counter-attack saw a clinical College regain the lead with McGrath scoring his second.
At this point, Pike were having the lion share of possession but they couldn’t get that vital equaliser with Cusack, Finucane and Morrison all going close.
With the Hoops throwing caution to the wind as they chased an equaliser, the home side got their insurance goal with ten minutes remaining when a loose pass in midfield was ruthlessly punished by Kai O’Neill.
Pike could only muster up a couple of half chances in the remaining minutes but the Cork side’s defence stood tall to see out the game.
On a sour note, late in the game, a player from each side was red carded which was followed by an altercation on the sideline that ended with the referee brandishing a number of red cards.
Pike Rvs: Marius Palen, Jack Croke, Ethan Joyce, Sean McCallig, Jamie Mitchell, Pa Steed, Finn Morrison, Cameron Walsh, Cian Punch, Shane Finucane, Aaron Cusack. Subs: Ryan Moloney, Jack Meaney, Callum O’Hanlon, Cathal McNamara, Scott Connolly.
