Munster Rugby face trip to South Africa for United Rugby Championship quarter-finals

Conor Murray, left, and Craig Casey of Munster celebrate at the final whistle of their URC victory over Benetton at Virgin Media Park in Cork on Friday night

MUNSTER Rugby face a trip to Durban and a date with the Hollywoodbets Sharks in the United Rugby Championship quarter-final play-offs at the end of the month following the completion of the final round of regular season fixtures this weekend.

2023 URC champions Munster will go head-to-head with the Sharks at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Saturday, May 31, 5.30pm Irish time. The game will be live on TG4 and Premier Sports.

Munster secured a sixth-place finish in the URC table following their precious 30-21 bonus point victory over Benetton in front of a capacity attendance of 8,800 at a sun-drenched Virgin Media Park in Cork on Friday evening.

This will be Munster's second time to play the Sharks in South Africa this season in the URC. Munster lost out to the Sharks, 41-24, in Durban last October in what proved to be Graham Rowntree’s final game in charge of the side.

Should Munster overcome the Sharks in their quarter-final, they will face either the Bulls or Edinburgh in the semi-finals.

The results from this weekend's Round 18 fixtures ensured that the four home teams were ranked; Leinster (1), Vodacom Bulls (2), Hollywoodbets Sharks (3) and Glasgow Warriors (4).

While the four home quarter-finalists are best placed to reach the decider, history may yet deliver a twist as no team ranked No 1 has ever lifted the BKT URC trophy. In past seasons, it was fourth-placed Glasgow (2024), fifth-placed Munster (2023), and second-placed DHL Stormers (2022) who emerged as champions.
