John Gilhooly from Castleconnell is the director of London’s Wigmore Hall
A LIMERICK man has received a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) from King Charles III.
John Gilhooly from Castleconnell received his CBE medal in an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle for services to music.
Mr Gilhooly is the director of London’s Wigmore Hall and Chairman of the Royal Philharmonic Society.
Under Mr Gilhooly’s leadership, Wigmore Hall was the first UK venue to present live classical concerts after the first Covid lockdown ended in June 2020.
His tenure at Wigmore Hall has seen the programme grow to the most extensive classical music series in the UK with over 500 events annually.
Mr Gilhooly has been Director of Wigmore Hall, one of the world’s leading centres for the performance of chamber music and song, since 2000, and Chairman of the Royal Philharmonic Society since 2010.
Mr Gilhooly was previously awarded an OBE in Queen Elizabeth II's 2013 birthday honours and in 2012 he was conferred with the prestigious award of Honorary Membership of the Royal College of Music by King Charles III.
Wigmore Hall focuses on great musical works - their repertoire extends 250 years on either side of Beethoven (born 1770) – from the Renaissance to contemporary jazz and new commissions from today’s composers.
