LIMERICK artist Liam McCarthy has tragically passed away in Turkey after suffering a stroke last February.

The 52-year-old from Castletroy was planning on returning home when he fell ill. He was taken to Isparta University Hospital where he was placed on a life support machine.

His loving family set up a GoFundMe page called Bring Liam Back. To date €40,444 has been raised – a testament to how highly thought of Liam and his family are.

Late on Wednesday night, Liam’s beloved sister Elaine said: “It is with great sadness that we have to tell you that our brother Liam has passed away.”

Writing on the GoFundMe page, Elaine said: “Although we are heartbroken we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of friends, family and total strangers. 

“Together we fought a good fight. Unfortunately it was not to be. Tonight Liam is at peace, his struggle is over. Thank you all for your support and generosity."

Liam will be remembered as a character. Art was his first love and he studied at at the Limerick School of Art and Design. 

Liam loved poetry, travel, drinking coffee and chatting to people. The outpouring of support and altruism demonstrated just how loved he was.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days. May he rest in peace.
