Saddle up as Limerick embraces pedal power for Bike Week 2024

LIMERICK is getting into top gear for a week-long celebration of cycling which started on Sunday and runs until May 19.

Organised in partnership between Limerick City and County Council and Limerick Sports Partnership, Limerick Bike Week aims to promote active travel, health benefits, and sustainable transport while encouraging and inspiring cycling in the community.

Throughout the week, schools will be hosting their own bike week events, including cycle to school days, cycle training sessions, cycle tours of the picturesque Limerick Greenway, and bike maintenance workshops. These initiatives underscore the importance of behavioural change towards adopting healthier and more sustainable travel habits.

Limerick Bike Week features a diverse range of events for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Highlights include a family cycle along the UL to city centre riverbank which kicked off festivities on Sunday, May 12.

There is a sunset cycle for all the family on Friday, May 17, starting at 6.30pm from the historic King John's Castle.

A bike maintenance workshop on the Limerick Greenway at Barnagh Hub on Saturday, May 18, where you can learn essential bike maintenance skills while enjoying the stunning views along the Limerick Greenway.

A family fun day and bike ride at Arthur’s Quay Park on Sunday, May 19 from 2pm to 4pm concludes the week in style. There will be music, entertainment, fun, and games for the whole family.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes; however, for those without access to one, a limited number of TFI Bikes will be provided free of charge at events on May 17 and May 19.

The Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Gerald Mitchell is encouraging people to embrace pedal power, saying, “We are thrilled to once again host Bike Week in Limerick. Cycling not only offers numerous health benefits but also contributes to a cleaner, greener environment.

"The range of events and initiatives in Limerick provide an excellent opportunity for residents and visitors alike to explore our beautiful city on two wheels.”

Brian Kennedy, director of service, transportation and mobility strategy at Limerick City and County Council commented: “Bike Week is a fantastic initiative that aligns with our vision for a more sustainable and accessible transport system in Limerick. We encourage everyone to join us for these events and experience the joy of cycling first hand.”

Pat Quigley, active cities officer at Limerick Sports Partnership says there is something to suit all levels of cycling ability.

“Limerick Sports Partnership is delighted to partner with Limerick City and County Council throughout Bike Week 2024. Cycling offers a number of health benefits and is a sustainable activity that fosters really strong social connections.

"The aim of the week is to encourage more people to cycle – for school, for work, or in their own communities. So whether it’s a social cycle on the Greenway or mountain biking in Ballyhoura, there's something for everyone to enjoy this week," he said.
