Brian Ryan - RIP PICTURE: Mulcair Vets
A LIMERICK man who passed away after travelling to Paris for the Rugby World Cup has been named locally.
Brian Ryan passed away last Thursday after travelling to the French capital for the Ireland v Scotland game in the Stade de France.
Mr Ryan was the senior partner in Mulcair Vets based in Cappamore and was well known in his locality.
Local Councillor Martin Ryan said he was "shocked" by Mr Ryan's sudden passing and the esteemed vet was "so well got" in the locality.
The late Mr Ryan was Cllr John Egan’s vet for decades and knew the man extremely well.
"When I heard the news the other morning I was totally shocked he was due to come to us this Wednesday morning to scan cows. The shock to me was unbelievable because he was an extremely fit person,” said Mr Egan.
The Murroe-based councillor described Mr Ryan as an "excellent and meticulous vet".
"Two or three weeks ago I had a drink with him and we were talking about modern farming and modern veterinary practices. I used to get on very well with him both from a social and business point of view. If he came at night time to a case he would stay for a chat.
"He had fierce regard for his customers and his customers had fierce regard for him," said Mr Egan.
He said that any young vets that accompanied Mr Ryan into his yard, Mr Ryan kept the young vets fully informed.
"He put a lot of emphasis on young vets listening to farmers when they come into their yards and don’t think because they had a degree in veterinary medicine that the farmer knew nothing. Brian was interested in the farmer’s experience and knowledge of husbandry. He will be an awful loss to his wife and children and an awful loss to the community," said Mr Egan.
Mr Ryan had a great interest in many sports.
"A few weeks ago we had a big chat on Limerick’s All-Ireland victories and what it had done for the morale of Limerick people," said Mr Egan.
The highly regarded veterinary surgeon qualified in 1984 from University College Dublin. He then spent six years working in Wales before returning to Cappamore.
Mr Ryan's wife Anna Nolan is also a veterinary surgeon at the same vets in the village.
On the Mulcair Vets website, Mr Ryan was described as having a "patient and calm nature" with a great interest in sports including golf, rugby and GAA.
A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affair confirmed it is aware of the death of an Irish citizen in France and is providing consular assistance.
