A “MASSIVE leak” at the Askeaton Pool and Leisure facility has been repaired and contaminated water in a dump tank at the pool has been removed according to Limerick City and County Council (LCCC).
According to LCCC, these works and other pool stabilisation works were required to be completed before moving to the tender stage for capital upgrades at the facility.
Limerick Twenty Thirty DAC are assisting as service provider with the tendering process.
According to LCCC: “It remains a key priority of the Board of Askeaton Pool and Leisure DAC, Limerick City and County Council and Askeaton Swimming Club to complete the capital works and reopen Askeaton Pool and Leisure Centre as soon as possible.”
Askeaton swimming pool closed its doors on March 16 to facilitate boiler room renovation works - resulting in the facility closing down for a period of 12 months, much to the public’s dismay.
A statement, issued by Limerick City and County Council shortly before the closure of the swimming pool in March read: "Despite best efforts and engagement with all key stakeholders it has not been possible to maintain a limited operation of the Centre on a temporary basis until the capital works get underway.
"The Board and its shareholders are committed to making sure the health and safety of all users are maintained at all times. This requires maintaining water quality, life guarding and most importantly, child protection and welfare. To facilitate this, sufficient time would be required to acquire the services of an appropriate alternative operator through a public procurement process."
At this time it is unknown when works will get underway at Askeaton Swimming Pool but it is understood that Limerick Twenty Thirty DAC have yet to appoint an operator for the pool works.
