A WOMAN is in a critical condition this Saturday night after she was assaulted on the side of a road close to the Limerick-Tipperary border.

There are unconfirmed reports the woman, aged in her 20s, was travelling in a car which was rammed off the road on the R494, Birdhill, County Tipperary. It is believed she was dragged from her car and viciously attacked by other women. 

A garda spokesperson said officers and emergency services responded to the incident shortly before 5.30pm this Saturday.

They discovered a woman, who was “seriously injured”, when they arrived at the scene.

“She was airlifted to hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

“The scene remains preserved for a technical examination and the road is closed with local diversions in place,” said a garda spokesperson.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them.

“Any road users who were on the R494 between Birdhill and the M7 motorway between 5pm and 6pm on Saturday, March 21 and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Nenagh Garda Station on (067) 50450, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station. Investigations are ongoing,” said a garda spokesperson.
