Bus Éireann, which operates 343 confirmed the "serious anti-social behaviour incident".
The provider added the matter has been referred to the gardai for investigation, with closed circuit television being made available.
"Our driver received injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment and we will continue to provide every support," the company added in a statement.
"Bus Éireann does not tolerate antisocial or criminal behaviour towards our customers or staff. As this matter is currently subject to a Gardaí investigation we are not in a position to provide any additional information on this specific incident," they added.
Jim Boylan, the Limerick branch secretary of the drivers' union, the National Bus and Rail Union said: "We condemn this fully and want to wish our friend and colleague the very best. This is more ammunition for the need for a dedicated transport police service."
