PEOPLE in Limerick over the age of 18 are being urged to avail of a Covid-19 booster vaccine which has been adapted to give better protection against the Omicron variant.
Given the the latest data, which shows there were 272 new cases in the Mid-West during the week of December 17, the Department of Public Health Mid-West is urging people aged 18 and over to avail of their free booster vaccine.
According to the Department, the increase of infections in the region may have a negative impact on healthcare settings, long-term care facilities, and other settings with vulnerable and at-risk people.
Earlier this Thursday, the HSE announced it was rolling out a free second booster for those aged between 18 and 49 with immediate effect.
Adults in that cohort can avail of their booster dose if it has been six months since their last Covid-19 vaccine, or since they last had a Covid-19 infection.
A number of groups were already eligible for a second booster before the latest announcement. In addition, a third booster is already available for those aged 65 and over, as well as for people aged 12 and over who have a weak immune system.
Consultant in Public Health Medicine at Public Health Mid-West, Dr Marie Casey said that while increases in respiratory infections are expected during a busy winter period, there are concerns about the surge in cases of Covid-19.
“This is placing increased pressure on health services. There is room for improvement in the uptake of the boosters across the Mid-West region. If you are eligible and are not up-to-date with the booster vaccination, please make an appointment to get vaccinated,” she commented.
