Ellen Gannon cares for her brothers James and Andrew with non-verbal autism

A YOUNG girl who is passionate about caring for her brothers has been named as Limerick Person for the Month for her unwavering commitment.

Ellen Gannon, age 11, is from Newcastle West. She was honoured as Munster Young Carer of the Year 2024 late last year for caring for her brothers Andrew and James Gannon, 10, with non-verbal autism.

As part of the Netwatch Young Carer of the Year national awards, Ellen was “so happy” to receive the prestigious accolade.

She has now also been named as Limerick Person of the Month, collecting her award with her mother Helen O’Flynn this Tuesday, February 11 at the Clayton Hotel, Limerick city.

Upon receiving this, she said: “I’m feeling very happy and I’m delighted to be picked as Person of the Month for young carer. Thank you.”

While her mother Helen said: “We’re really proud of her, she’s amazing with her two brothers and it is well deserved.

“It’s a great talking point for everyone in the family and the community. It’s really wonderful.”

While Ellen herself has ADHD and Dyslexia, her dedication to minding and supporting her brothers everyday is unwavering.

“She is a special sister, showing her brothers with love and upbeat energy always!,” her mother previously said.

Despite her responsibilities, Ellen excels in sports, enjoys art, and brings joy to everyone around her. She is an avid Arsenal fan and also loves football.

She was rushing to GAA training shortly after collecting her Person of the Month award!

A pupil at Kilcolman National School, Ellen’s brothers Andrew and James attend Nano Nagle special school in Listowel, Co Kerry.

Ellen and her mum will proceed to the Limerick Person of the Year ceremony, where the coveted award will be presented to one of the 12 Person of the Month recipients.

Limerick Person of the Month is sponsored by the Limerick Leader, Southern Media and the Clayton Hotel.
