LIVE: Met Éireann's fresh ice and snow warnings bring ‘treacherous’ travel across Ireland

Fresh weather warnings are now in force across much of Ireland as Met Éireann warns of “treacherous travel conditions” due to bitter cold, frost, black ice and wintry showers.

Two alerts that had been in place since Sunday expire at 11am this morning, but they have been replaced by new Status Yellow warnings running right through to 9am on Tuesday.

A low temperature and ice warning now covers Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster, Galway and Roscommon, with Met Éireann warning that temperatures will fall to between -1 and -3 degrees, bringing “sharp frost and icy stretches” and “black ice”.

Meanwhile, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo are under a Status Yellow snow and ice warning, where “wintry showers with sleet and some snow accumulations” are expected, along with “sharp frost and ice”, creating hazardous travel conditions and poor visibility.

According to Met Éireann, today (Monday) began “very cold”, with “frost and icy stretches on untreated surfaces slow to clear”, as well as patches of freezing fog and some lying snow. While many areas will stay dry and sunny, wintry showers will continue to affect the north and northwest, with temperatures struggling to rise above 1 to 6 degrees.

The danger will return quickly tonight, with Met Éireann warning that “widespread frost and icy stretches will form early on along with patches of mist and fog”. Temperatures will drop as low as -3 degrees, before cloud builds from the west and outbreaks of rain or sleet reach Atlantic coastal areas by morning.

It will remain icy for many early on Tuesday, particularly in the east, before rain and drizzle spread eastwards from the west through the morning and early afternoon. Met Éireann says it will then turn brighter with sunny spells and scattered showers, but temperatures will still be low, with highs of just 3 to 8 degrees.

Looking further ahead, Met Éireann says “low pressure dominates bringing unsettled conditions with spells of rain spreading from the Atlantic.”

On Wednesday, “patchy rain and drizzle will spread across the country from the west, possibly turning to sleet over higher ground.” It will remain “cold in the east and northeast” with highs of just 3 to 5 degrees, while the west and south will be milder at 5 to 9 degrees.

After rain clears on Wednesday night, Thursday is expected to see “rain spread over the southern half of the country with scattered showers further north.”

By Friday, Met Éireann says there will be “a mix of sunny spells and showers, mainly affecting Atlantic coastal counties,” with temperatures remaining low at 3 to 7 degrees.
