EMERGENCY personnel and crews from Limerick City and County Council have been deployed this Sunday to clear fallen trees and other debris associated with Storm Ashley.

As the first named storm of the winter makes its way across Ireland a number of warnings, issued by Met Éireann, remain in place.

As of 4.30pm, around 1,200 homes and businesses were without electricity in Limerick. According to ESB Networks, more than 700 customers in the Moylish area on the northside of the city lost their supply shortly before 2pm this Sunday while there are a number of smaller outages in the county area - in Foynes, Newcastle West and Patrickswell.

A status orange wind warning for seven counties - Clare, Kerry, Galway, Mayo, Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim - remains valid until 8pm this Sunday while a status yellow wind warning for the entire country remains valid until midnight.

There have been several reports of fallen trees associated with Storm Ashley in Limerick including Moymore in Old Pallas (pictured above). The tree fell close to nearby homes but thankfully no damage to properties was caused.

Trees also came down on the main road between Ardagh and Carrigkerry in west Limerick and on the Cork Road, near Lucy's Cross, Patrickswell.

Despite the difficult conditions, most people appear to be heeding the warnings and there have been no reports of any major incidents associated with Storm Ashley in Limerick.

Met Éireann is urging members of the public to take responsibility for their own safety during the storm while the National Directorate for Fire & Emergency Management is urging people to stay away from coastal areas due to adverse weather conditions.
