St Mary's Cathedral's new artist in residence, Nici LeGear

ST MARY’S Cathedral has announced the appointment of its first artist in residence, Nici Le Gear.

Nici will begin her residency this September and will be in the post until the end of October.

The theme of her residency will be Echoes in Stone: Landscapes of Memory.

Speaking on her appointment, the Dean of Limerick, Rev Niall Sloane, said: “We are delighted to welcome Nici to St Mary’s for this first in the cathedral’s long history.

“Art and  beauty are so important to us and we see this residency as another opportunity to engage art, people and the Cathedral”.

“I wish to thank Ms Etain Cooney of Limerick and City & County Council who helped us with this project which is funded by the Arts Council and Limerick City and County Council, through the Limerick Arts Programme 2025”.

Nici, a self-taught artist who specialises in oil painting, will be creating three oil paintings exploring St Mary's Cathedral as “a living testament to  community life”.

Alongside the paintings, Nici is creating a Community Tapestry of Voices, collecting memories and stories from people connected to St Mary's Cathedral.

No artistic experience is needed, people are encouraged to just bring memories or their connection to this place. Drop-in sessions will be announced soon.
