Overshadow fear on Limerick hotel's plans to build apartments for its staff

Kilmurry Lodge Hotel attracts objection from neighbour over its building proposals

Overshadow fear on Limerick hotel's plans to build apartments for its staff

Management at Kilmurry Lodge Hotel in Castletroy are seeking permission to build staff accommodation

A HOTEL’S neighbour objected to its plans to build a three-storey complex over the impact it could have on solar panels he may install in the future.

Management at Kilmurry Lodge Hotel in Castletroy are seeking permission to demolish an existing cottage in the grounds of the building.

In its place, it’s proposed to build a three-storey staff accommodation apartment block.

This would comprise of two one-bedroom apartments, and two, two-bedroomed apartments.

A bike store is also planned, alongside an alteration to the hotel’s boundary wall to facilitate the development.

However, there has been an objection to the application, which is currently before Limerick council planners for a decision.

“I have been considering the installation of solar panels on the south-facing roof of my home, the only viable location for panels. The shadow cast by the proposed apartment block over the solar panels will prohibit their energy generation capability during winter and spring months,” the neighbour wrote in his objection.

He said in the past his family and him have enjoyed an “excellent relationship” with the Kilmurry Lodge.

He added that, he is objecting to it “with regret”, claiming the hotel did not consult with him.

A decision was due to be made on the development this Monday.

However, council planners have sought further information from the hotel.

They are seeking more information on the occupancy rate of the staff’s accommodation, and how it will operate within the wider hotel campus.

Planners are also seeking information on the impact the building would have on neighbouring houses, including the one belonging to the party who objected.

Once this information is received, a decision date will be set.
