Mixed day for St Munchin's College in Munster Schools Cups

St Munchin's College had a mixed day against Bandon Grammar School in the Munster Schools Cups this Thursday

ST MUNCHIN’S College suffered defeat in the first round of Clayton Hotels Munster Schools Senior Cup away to Bandon Grammar School on Thursday as the Corbally side’s Junior Cup squad scored an impressive victory over the same opposition.

St Munchin’s Senior Cup side fell to a narrow 7-5 defeat to their West Cork hosts, while the Junior Cup side booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 12-3 victory over Bandon Grammar School.

This is the third successive year that the St Munchin’s senior side has lost out to Bandon in the Cup.

The home side went in front when Victor Lovell cut through the Limerick side’s defence to score, with Jack Crowley’s conversion making it 7-0.

Bandon retained their lead until half time, thanks to some tenacious defending.

Prop Evan Sheehan forced his way over for a St Munchin’s try in the third quarter which was not converted.

Despite St Munchin’s dominating possession and territory for long stretches of the remainder of the game, Bandon held firm to grab a narrow victory.

St Munchin’s College will now face local rivals Ardscoil Ris in a Senior Cup play-off fixture next week on a date, venue and kick-off time to be confirmed. The winners of that game will advance to the quarter-finals, with the loser’s exiting the Cup.

Meanwhile, St Munchin’s College junior side are already through to the quarter-finals following their hard fought win over Bandon Grammar.

St Munchin’s College went in front with a try from Kean Sheehy after just five minutes.

Bandon replied with a penalty goal to trial 5-3 at half-time.

Number eight Liam Neilan bagged a crucial second try for the Corbally side in the second half to seal a deserved nine-point victory.
