A LIMERICK soccer star has been honored by her former college in the United States with a prestigious hall of fame award.

Limerick native Danielle Sheehy who currently plays for Moyross United FC returned to the US to receive the award in Hutchinson Community College in Kansas.

Sheehy was honored alongside former American football and basketball stars from the college at the ceremony which took place at half-time of a Hutchinson Blue Dragon men's basketball game last month.

Sheehy credits Moyross' Pat Halpin as a huge influence on her career, taking her to matches and trials over the years.

The award is a boost not just for Sheehy but serves as inspiration to other girls in the area to see a local be so successful in the US.

In Sheehy's single season in the US, she broke six school records including most goals (38) and most hat-tricks in one season (8). The incredible run "reshaped" the Hutchinson Community College record books, according to Steve Carpenter, the college's Sports Information Director.

“Once I got used to the heat in Hutchinson, it went pretty good for me,” Sheehy told a college publication in Kansas.

Sheehy got her Stateside career off to a remarkable start, scoring four goals on her debut. Hutchinson CC knew pretty early they had a special talent on their hands.

“From that first game, I knew we were going to be a good team,” she said. “We had great players. We all trained very intense. I knew we were going to be good.”

“Hutchinson was the best time of my life,” Sheehy added. “Playing at Hutchinson made things possible for me. I never wanted to leave.”

Sheehy went on to play in the Women's League of Ireland for Raheny United and Cork City. She currently plays in the Limerick Women's & Schoolgirls Soccer League with Moyross United FC.
