Tesco Ireland faces wait for permission to increase sale of alcohol at Limerick store

Objections see supermarket giant's proposal referred to An Coimisiún Pleanála

Tesco Ireland faces wait for permission to increase sale of alcohol at Limerick store

Tesco Ireland is bidding to increase the amount of alcohol it can sell at its store in Moyross

THREE people have appealed against a decision to grant Tesco Ireland permission to increase the amount of alcohol it can sell at its branch at Moyross.

The supermarket giant secured conditional planning permission from Limerick City and County Council to open an off-licence at its store in Watch House Cross.

Currently, the firm only sells wine at its outlet in Watch House Cross.

But it wants to expand this offering to include beers and spirits. According to regulations, shops are allowed to sell wine if it is “subsidiary to the main retail use of the store”.

Permission is required to sell alcoholic beverages other than wine, as is the case here.

The application to open an off-licence comes despite the fact there is a Carry Out liquor store in the unit adjoining Tesco’s Moyross branch.

Now it will be up to An Coimisiún Pleanála, formerly An Bord Pleanála to decide on the application.

The national planning appeals body has not yet given a date as to when it expects a decision to be made.

Among the original objections, one person wrote to council to state the supermarket borders St Bridget’s paupers’ graveyard.

A second appeal highlighted fears over a rise in anti-social behaviour.
