A COUNCILLOR has raised what he’s described as a “ludicrous” situation where there are no lollipop men and women at a school along the busy N21.

Fine Gael’s Liam Galvin said at Templeglantine National School, children face stepping out onto the road with no support.

“A national primary route where there are children from the age of five years disembarking from buses, getting out of cars and going onto busy carriageways,” he said.

Cllr Galvin also highlighted instances at other schools in west Limerick where teachers need to be present morning and evening to ensure their students get across the road safely due to a lack of infrastructure.

He has called on the Department of Education to fund all safety measures needed, for example crossings, lighting, speed ramps, signage, plus parking.

The Abbeyfeale man did this through a notice of motion, which secured unanimous support at the March council meeting.

“As sure as night follows day, there will be an accident at one of those locations, and we’ll be looking at each other asking why did we not put down crossings, why didn't we do traffic lights, why didn't we do signage or ramps for the sake of a few quid?”
