CONCERNS over road safety along a busy stretch of the Devon Road in west Limerick have prompted renewed calls for clearer signage at a narrow bridge near the former Devon Road Creamery.
The issue, raised by Cllr Liam Galvin at the November Newcastle West Municipal District meeting, focused on a tight bridge where two vehicles frequently meet with little room to pass.
Cllr Galvin said the location has been a known danger point and despite repeated appeals, no warning or yield signage has yet been installed. Cllr Galvin said: “Two cars approach that bridge and there isn’t enough room for one. Unless one driver yields, it’s a stand-off. What’s needed is a yield right-of-way sign and narrow bridge signs at both ends.”

The road forms a key route to the Limerick Greenway from Devon Road and Templeglantine, and traffic has increased significantly in recent years. Cllr Galvin warned that without proper signposting, the risk of collisions will continue to rise.
He stressed that the bridge’s tight structure, combined with increased visitor numbers using the Limerick Greenway, makes the lack of signage unsustainable. He urged the council to act swiftly to ensure the safety of both local motorists and tourists travelling the popular route.
