ACTION in the Limerick Women's and Schoolgirls Soccer League continues this week after a dramatic opening week of fixtures.

DIVISION 2:

On Tuesday night last, Lough Derg welcomed Murroe to Clarisford Park for the opening game of Division 2. It was a fiercely competitive clash, with both teams eager to start the season on a high.

The deadlock was broken in the 34th minute when Shauna Ryan found the net for Murroe. The visitors held onto their 1-0 lead going into half-time.

The second half resumed with the same intensity, as both sides pushed hard. With 15 minutes to go, Gemma Ryan doubled Murroe’s lead. Despite chances at both ends, it finished 2-0 to Murroe, who took all three points.

Elsewhere, Kilfrush Crusaders hosted Regional United at Elton Sports Field. Regional got off to a dream start, scoring within the opening minute through number eight, S. Dempsey. It proved to be the only goal of the game, with both teams battling well until the final whistle.

Looking ahead in Division 2, 2024 runners-up Ballylanders begin their campaign this week with the visit of Lough Derg to Castle Park for a 6:30 PM kick-off. Meanwhile, Murroe will be aiming to build on their strong start as they welcome Kilfrush to Murroe AFC Grounds, also on Tuesday evening.

DIVISION 1:

Division 1 action got underway on Thursday night, with Moyross making the short trip across the city to face Mungret Regional. Chloe Kenna opened the scoring on 30 minutes, with Danielle Sheehy doubling the lead on 57.

Evelyn Coffey then added two more in the 61st and 71st minutes to seal a 4-0 win for Moyross, starting their season in style.

Across the city, Newtown Rovers began their campaign by hosting Herbertstown. Newtown started brightly, earning a penalty which Steph Walsh converted on 19 minutes. Just three minutes later, Emily McCarthy made it 2-0. However, Herbertstown fought back, with Grace Buckley pulling one back just before half-time.

The second half saw Jordan Heffernan level things up on 53 minutes. With momentum now on their side, Herbertstown took the lead through another superb effort from Grace Buckley.

Chloe O’Dwyer extended the lead to 4-2 with 20 minutes remaining. Olivia Quigley gave Newtown hope with a goal shortly after, but Herbertstown held firm to secure all three points and a strong start to the season.

The fixture between Listowel Celtic and Bridge Celtic was postponed and will be rescheduled.

UPCOMING FIXTURES:

This week sees 2024 Division 1 champions Aisling Annacotty kick off their season on Tuesday night as they welcome Listowel Celtic. Herbertstown will look to continue their winning form when they host Mungret Regional. Both matches kick off at 6:30pm.

On Thursday, newly promoted Bridge Celtic will aim for a strong start as they host Newtown Rovers, also at 6:30pm.
