Information campaign to assist Limerick voters as they make history

Campaign highlights the role and responsibilities for Ireland’s first directly elected mayor

Information campaign to assist Limerick voters as they make history

A PUBLIC information campaign for the voters of Limerick, who have the opportunity to make history in June, has been launched to inform people about the new role of directly elected mayor.

The people of the city and county will have the chance to take part in Ireland’s first ever vote for a directly elected mayor on June 7.

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, in collaboration with Limerick City and County Council, launched the advertising campaign which includes local print, media and outdoor as well as digital and social media.

Limerick City and County Council CEO, Dr Pat Daly said that already there is some anticipation and discussion in Limerick about the directly elected mayor but they want to ensure that everyone has enough information regarding the new office of mayor.

“As well as working with the department on this advertising campaign, the council will also be facilitating local information events. I am proud that this county will be making history in June and I would encourage everyone to engage with the information provided,” said Mr Daly.

The campaign encourages local people to find out more at a dedicated web page: www.Limerick.ie/mayor

Minister of State with responsibility for Local Government, Alan Dillon said in early June, the people of Limerick will make history by being the first voters in Ireland to directly elect a mayor for their city and county.

“Having a mayor with executive powers is a big change for local government in Ireland with the mayor being directly accountable to the people of Limerick city and county.

“As this is a new type of mayor, we want everyone in Limerick to be aware of what they will be voting for and I would encourage everyone in Limerick to find out more for themselves.

“As well as the advertising campaign, we are also arranging for an information booklet to be distributed to homes throughout the city and county. History is being made in Limerick and we want everyone to have the information they need to understand what the new mayoral role will involve,” said Mr Dillon.

In 2019, the people of Limerick city and county voted to have a directly elected mayor, who will be in office for a term of five years. Currently, there are 13 candidates vying for the role.
