“THERE are hundreds of families that won't have a loved one at the table this Christmas,” said Councillor Eddie Ryan at a special meeting of Limerick City and County Council (LCCC).

Last Thursday in the Dooradoyle chamber, Councillor Jerome Scanlan and the Independents proposed a motion that could potentially revolutionise road safety in Limerick.

The group are seeking the introduction of an average speed camera safety system on all regional and national roads, similar to the M7 model already in place, which stretches for 9km along the Limerick to Nenagh road.

The proposal to install these cameras on Limerick roads aims to enhance the safety and well-being of citizens.

The motion, which was supported by most elected representatives, was prompted by concerned constituents who have witnessed a rise in speeding on regional Limerick roads.

Councillor Scanlan highlighted the effectiveness of the existing average speed camera system on the city’s surrounding motorway.

Councillor Liam Galvin expressed his disagreement with the motion, saying: “that system will work on the motorway where the points are at locations where you can't enter or exit a motorway.”

“From any other junction in between those two points, it's not going to work,” he added.

Speaking out against the use of speed vans operated by GoSafe, which park temporarily on roadsides across the county, he stated: “They're nothing but a cash cow for a company that is making millions by taking the money out of people’s pockets.”

The councillor stressed the need for collaboration between the Department of Roads, local gardai, and strategic placement of speed cameras at dangerous locations.

It has been recommended by Councillor Stephen Keary that this issue be brought to all authorities by elected representatives, in an effort to actualise the passed motion.
