LIMERICK City and County Council has announced funding for the construction of a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) in St Mary’s Park, King’s Island.

Following consultation with residents and relevant stakeholders in the area, a proposed site was identified for a MUGA.

The facility, which will be 13mx26m in size, is to be within walking distance of all residents in St Mary’s Park.

The main source funding is to come from the Economic & Social Intervention Fund which is funded through the Limerick Regeneration Directorate. An additional commitment of funding has been secured through Limerick Sports Partnership and Sláintecare, Healthy Communities which will bring this project to fruition.

This sporting facility is said to provide a “top-class” amenity for community of St Mary’s Park.

The Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Councillor Gerard Mitchell has welcomed the announcement: “It is really important for young people to have a free and safe space for a kickabout.

“This is a great initiative and one that we all, I’m sure, welcome for the area.”

Speaking of the announcement, Chairperson of the St Mary’s Park Regeneration Committee, Helen Flanagan said: “I am delighted that funding for this project has been allocated to the community of St Mary’s Park and the wider King’s Island community. In addition to the existing playground this project will provide an amenity for older children and young people to play in.

Principal of St Mary’s National School, Eoghan O’Byrne also added: “The funding that has been secured for this MUGA through the Limerick Regeneration Economic and Social Intervention Fund will provide the community of St Mary’s Park with a fantastic amenity for all the children and community to enjoy. I welcome the delivery of this project for the community.”
