CONCERNS have been raised regarding illegal parking outside Desmond Castle in Newcastle West.
A recent incident saw an ambulance blocked from accessing a residence as a motorist had illegally parked in front of the home's entrance.
Councillors in Newcastle West raised the issue at the June meeting of the district where they said they had been contacted by numerous people regarding the ongoing incidents of illegal parking.
Councillors discussed the possibility of installing a movable barrier in the entrance that could be moved by those living in the local residence as well as staff at Desmond Castle to gain access to the grounds.
Councillor Tom Ruddle, Cathaoirleach of the Newcastle West municipal district said the council were looking into ways to solve the ongoing issue.
“The entrance is just beside the AIB bank, it leads into Desmond Castle as well as a family's private residence.
“One day an ambulance couldn't gain access because someone had parked their car outside and gone into the bank. It is a big issue and it needs to be solved”.
Cllr Ruddle said it is frustrating for locals in the town.
“That piece of ground is owned by the council so we are going to try and do something that will stop people from parking there, without blocking access.
“I am amazed that something hasn't been done yet. The numbers visiting the castle have increased so much as well.
“Twenty five years ago they had 1,200 visitors a year, last year they had 26,000 visitors and they expect it to be nearly 30,000 this year”.
The grounds of the castle have been used for multiple events including musical concerts and farmers markets.
The 12th century castle was built by the Fitzgerald family, better known as “The Earls of Desmond”.
The castle dates back to the 13th century but the main feature is the Desmond Banqueting Hall, an imposing two-storey structure that was used by the Earls of Desmond for banqueting and entertainment.
