UNIVERSITY of Limerick has sought planning permission for the “change of use” of the former Dunnes Stores building in Limerick city centre.
The building, which is located on Sarsfield Street in the city centre is currently designated for retail use, and the university is seeking permission for it to be used for educational purposes.
It is understood the application, which is procedural in nature, has been submitted to allow for more activity to be undertaken in the building.
Also, as part of the university's planning application, permission is being sought to build a two-metre high louvre screen in an effort to conceal the mechanical ventilation plant on the roof.
Having opened its doors to various faculties in February last year, the old shopping centre underwent internal works, including the addition of a new access lift and ramp which was built at the Sarsfield Street entrance, new doors installed and the first floor area fully refurbished.
Purchased by the UL Governing Authority in 2019 for €8 million, the site is already home to teaching spaces, a presentation area and a digital fabrication facility or Fab Lab.
In time, the City Centre Campus is intended by UL to have “upwards of 3,000 students and 250 staff,” on its grounds when it reaches its “full potential.”
