Permission sought to convert Limerick car parking spots into 'commercial space'

Permission sought to convert Limerick car parking spots into 'commercial space'

A render as to how the proposed conversion might look

PLANNING permission is being sought to change the top floor of a car park in the city centre.

Roly Chamberlayne, a project director with Dublin firm Jones Investments which specialises in the delivery of residential, commercial and investment properties, is seeking the green light from Limerick City and County Council for the project.

He wants to convert the upper level of the Cruises Street car park – located at Denmark Street

If permission is given, car spaces will make way for 1,810 square metres of commercial space, featuring roof terraces, and a landscaped courtyard. A new staircase will connect users to the ground- level streets.

City centre architect firm Healy Partners have designed the complex, which is expected to be decided upon by planners in June.

In a brief, the award-winning designers have designed the commercial space to have three layers – an outer layer, a workspace and an inner-layer where employees would work in groups.

On the northern side of the proposed design are toilets, showers and a canteen.

“These spaces are diverse in size and openness depending on what group work the users are undertaking. As they are located around a central courtyard, they too have access to netural ventilation and natural light,” the firm said.

Healy Partners added the extension “embraces both local context with the use of basic materials and a respect for site, climate, place and culture.”

“The design amalgamates the historic structures within the city and the proposed new build elements in a sensitive way,” Healy Partners told the Limerick Leader.
