GARDAI have launched an investigation after an elderly farmer in County Limerick had close to €2,000 worth of green diesel stolen.

Sergeant Ber Leetch said the crime occurred in the Hospital area on the night of March 15 into the early hours of March 16.

“A farmer in his eighties went out to check on his cattle. He got a strong smell of diesel in the yard. He checked his shed where the diesel tank is stored and discovered that the tank had been emptied. Approximately €1,800 worth of diesel was taken. He had a lock on the door of the shed but it was not of a very good standard,” said the crime prevention officer.

She added that it is important to consider the value of what you are protecting and to then “expect to spend 10% on security for it”.

The garda advice, she added is: “Fit a good quality bolt and lock to the shed door and then a tank lock, security is all about layering up so fit exterior lighting and enquire if your house alarm can be extended to your fuel tank."
