NATIONAL Spring Clean 2023, by An Taisce, is urging volunteers in Limerick to do their bit in the overall anti-litter campaign and to learn more about our circular economy - the opposite to our traditional ‘throwaway’ culture.
Throughout the month of April, the people of Limerick are asked to focus on their recycling habits, which feeds into the notion of keeping our circular economy turning - a waste prevention method which is based on less pollution, more reuse and protecting nature.
In 2022, 95 groups registered for the initiative in County Limerick. To date, the National Spring Clean has resulted in the collection of almost 45,000 tonnes of litter across Ireland.
By participating in organised clean-ups, groups and individuals of all ages can come together to make a positive contribution to their communities. As a result, we will transition to a more circular economy: less waste, lower emissions, and thus, a cleaner planet.
Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, TD Eamon Ryan said: “An Taisce’s National Spring Clean continues to showcase the dedication of volunteers all over the country.
“The commitment of volunteers in continuing to organise local clean-ups each year is a testament to the spirit in Irish communities and I would urge as many people as possible to get involved in the campaign.
“I look forward to the many events that will be held all over the country in the coming months.”
The principles of a circular economy have been central to the aims of the National Spring Clean initiative for the past 24 years and last year, some 35% of all waste collected was recycled, which has helped tackle biodiversity loss.
The National Spring Clean campaign is Ireland's largest and longest running anti-litter campaign and is operated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce, sponsored by the Mars Wrigley Company and is supported by Limerick City and County Council.
