GARDAI are appealing to cyclists and pedestrians to be safety-conscious when out and about on roads across Limerick over the coming weeks.

Many people have started new exercise routines since Christmas but the evenings are still dark and cold.

"In January, some people make an effort to start their excise routine again and this may include walking or cycling," said Sergeant Ber Leetch. "The evenings and mornings are still dark and the very wet and cold weather makes road conditions dangerous," she added.

Cyclists and pedestrians are regarded as vulnerable road users so the garda appeal to them is ensure they can see and be seen by other road users at all times.

"Wear bright clothing and a fluorescent bib, belt or jacket. Cyclists must always wear a helmet and show a white light to the front and a red light to the rear of the bicycle as well as reflectors. Never cycle close to a truck or lorry especially approaching a junction, do not assume that the lorry driver has seen you; you could be in his blind spot," appealed Sgt Leetch.

While specific advice is being issued to pedestrians and cyclists, motorists are also being asked to be very careful and to be aware of fatigue.

One person has died on Limerick roads so far this year.
