LIMERICK City and County Council has confirmed the sale of a derelict property in Castlemahon to a young couple.

The disposal of the council-owned bungalow was formally approved at the monthly meeting of the Municipal District of Newcastle West.

The site consists of a detached bungalow dwelling and surrounding lands - totalling 0.129 hectares.

In a briefing note, councillors were informed the property, which is located close to the national school and town shop in Castlemahon, was added on the Derelict Sites Register in August 2021.

Local independent councillor Jerome Scanlan believes this is “excellent news for Castlemahon”.

“It’s good to see the council acquire these properties and then dispose of them to local people,” Cllr Scanlan said.

“Those derelict sites badly need to be cleaned up throughout the area because not only are there some [derelict] sites in the private sector there are also some the council need to deal with also… There are at least seven derelict houses in the Municipal District of Newcastle West,” he  added.

After the property was compulsarily acquired by the local authority, it was brought to the market and advertised for sale by private treaty on October 17, 2022.

There were approximately 28 direct enquiries, three open viewings took place and six parties submitted bids to purchase the house and lands.

Subject to the completion of the relevant paperwork, the property will be disposed of to a young couple who have agreed a purchase price.
