THE DEPARTMENT of Public Health Mid-West is urging vulnerable people to avail of Covid-19 booster and flu vaccines as they expect a ‘rise in respiratory infections’ in Limerick and across the region over the Christmas period.

Figures released this Monday show just 39.3% of those aged over 65 in Limerick have availed of a third Covid-19 booster compared to the 95% who received a first booster and the 76% who received a second.

Public Health Mid-West says between December 4 and December 10, it was notified of 172 new Covid-19 cases; 42 new cases of influenza and 92 new RSV cases.

It says this was the highest number of flu and RSV recorded in a single week since the start of flu season and indicates that respiratory infections are circulating widely in the community.

Dr Marie Casey, Consultant in Public Health Medicine at Public Health Mid-West, said: “We are seeing very high levels of respiratory viruses including flu, Covid-19 and RSV circulating in the community. Infection with these viruses can be serious and can also lead to bacterial infections as well. We are asking everyone to ensure that they are up to date with their Covid or flu vaccines.”

Public Health Mid-West is also urging people to be aware of cold, or flu-like symptoms, as well as to avoid activity if they are feeling unwell.

It says it is concerned about the low uptake of the third Covid-19 booster in over-65s, in comparison to the primary course and first booster.

“This data means that over 60% of over-65s in our community, who are a high-risk group, are at an increased risk of serious infection and illness,” said a spokesperson.
