The alleged victim in the case is known to the garda but no evidence was heard during the procedural hearing

A LIMERICK-based garda charged with assault causing harm appeared before this Friday’s Limerick District Court sitting.

The garda, who cannot be named in order to protect the identity of the alleged victim, appeared before Judge Patricia Harney to make a bail application.

He was arrested, charged and cautioned at 9:45am on Friday. He made no reply to the caution and was handed a true copy of the charge against him.

The alleged victim in the case is known to the garda but no evidence was heard during the procedural hearing.

There was no objection to bail but conditions were canvassed with the man’s solicitor.

Judge Harney informed the Limerick-based garda that he is to be of good behaviour and reside at an address approved by the court. He must also be available by phone 24 hours a day and he must not have any contact with the alleged injured party.

The court heard the DPP has directed summary disposal, meaning the case will be dealt with at district court level where less harsh penalties apply.

The garda was released on his own bond of €100 and will next appear before Limerick District Court on a date in January of 2027.
