A WELL-KNOWN bookshop has been recognised by Limerick City Tidy Towns.

The group’s bi-monthly award for September and October 2026 has gone to the Celtic Bookshop, located at 2 Rutland Street

Maura O’Neill, Limerick City Tidy Towns said there are many reasons the volunteers decided to give the award to the business, in particular the owner Caroline O’Brien’s passion.

“We absolutely love this little independent bookshop on Rutland Street, not only for its gorgeous traditional Irish language signage and window displays, but also for Caroline’s passionate promotion of Limerick city and its attractions to all her customers.

“Despite substantial disruption and closures in the street due to the redevelopment of the Opera Centre, Caroline has continued to trade and takes great pride in the appearance of her shop, including occasionally picking up dog waste or litter outside the shop when necessary.”

Run by Caroline since 1995 the Celtic Bookshop is a family-owned bookshop which specialises in new and out-of-print books, maps and prints on local history and Irish studies.

The outlet was selected as one of Ireland’s Top 10 Independent Bookshops by the Irish Independent last year.

The Celtic Bookshop is Limerick City Tidy Towns fifth winner for 2026, following Realta’s win in January-February, Klaud9 Coffee’s win in March-April, Carl Scarpa Footwear’s win in May-June and Timmy Martins Pub’s win in July-August.

If you wish to nominate a business in the city for an award or indeed to volunteer with Limerick City Tidy Towns, they meet every Sunday morning at 11am at the corner of Thomas Street and O’Connell Street.
