McSweeney flags concern over Limerick mayoral reports

Mayor John Moran has not filed an update to councillors since the March meeting
FINE Gael councillor Dan McSweeney has expressed concern that Mayor John Moran has not furnished councillors with a monthly report he is legally required to provide for the past six months.
Under local government legislation, the Mayor and local authority director general Dr Pat Daly are required to provide councillors with monthly reports on their respective work.
These regular progress updates cover matters including the performance of their executive functions, the implementation of council policy and the provision of services.
It means that normally, there are two updates each from the two top figures on the local authority at each full meeting.
However, Mayor Moran has not filed an update to councillors since the March meeting.
Cllr McSweeney, who was the first priomh-chomhairleoir of the local authority and worked alongside the executive mayor, has raised questions with local authority bosses on the matter, in an email seen by the Limerick Leader newspaper.
In his email, Cllr McSweeney cited section 136 of the Local Government Act 2001, as amended by the 2024 legislation, which provides for a monthly mayoral report to be furnished to councillors.
Cllr McSweeney wrote to Mayor Moran, council boss Dr Daly, and included the other 39 councillors in the communication.
Cllr McSweeney warned that the failure to provide the reports could give rise to governance concerns at the local authority.
Mayor Moran is expected to respond directly to Cllr McSweeney.
The report to the March monthly meeting of Limerick City and County Council, the most recent available on the council's website (www.limerick.ie/council), outlines a range of engagements undertaken by Mayor Moran during that month.
It included details of meetings, visits and other activities carried out in his capacity as Mayor of Limerick.
