Jailed Hayes brother listed among subs for weekend's Munster hurling final

'It must be the first time a player has won a Munster medal while in jail'

Jailed Hayes brother listed among subs for weekend's Munster hurling final

JAILED convicted criminal Cian Hayes was listed among the substitutes for his club’s Munster hurling final on Saturday, Limerick Live has learned.

Kildimo-Pallaskenry GAA Club defeated Tipperary’s Cappawhite in the Munster club Junior B hurling series title in Raheenagh on Saturday.

The team, which was captained by Cian Hayes when they won the Limerick county title in November, were crowned Munster champions by one point.

Cian Hayes and his brother Daragh Hayes were jailed at Limerick Criminal Circuit Court just over a week ago for viciously assaulting then best friend Ciaran Ryan with a hurley and wrench.

Cian Hayes is listed as number 23 on the teamsheet which was sent to Limerick Live.

One GAA source said: “It must be the first time a player has won a Munster medal while in jail.”

They added: “Cian Hayes could yet go on to win an All-Ireland medal if they list him again.”

Kildimo-Pallaskenry has been asked to comment on why Cian Hayes was listed as number 23 on the teamsheet when he is currently in Limerick Prison? There has been no response at the time of publication.

The GAA source said the club would have submitted that list "just this week".

Kildimo-Pallaskenry has faced a backlash for giving testimonials for both Cian Hayes and Daragh Hayes which were handed to Judge Colin Daly by the brothers’ legal teams as part of their mitigation.

The victim - Mr Ryan - also represented the club and was a Limerick minor football star.

Cian Hayes, aged 34, of Ballyashea, Kildimo, was jailed for two and a half years with the final six months suspended for assault causing harm.

Judge Daly jailed Daragh Hayes, aged 37, of Ballyashea, Kildimo for three years with the final six months suspended for assault causing harm.

The judge said it appears both accused were under the illusion that the victim was “having some kind of clandestine affair or involvement with the ex-partner of Daragh Hayes”.

Judge Daly, in sentencing Daragh Hayes and Cian Hayes on January 30 at Limerick Criminal Circuit Court, said their conclusion was “completely unfounded”.

Mr Ryan spent eight days in hospital recovering from injuries which included a punctured lung, broken leg, broken arm, broken fingers, shattered ribs, severe bruising all over his body and he underwent emergency surgery.

Doctors told his mother hospital that if the healing didn’t go well following a lung operation “there's a 50/50 chance that your son won't survive”.
