WATCH: All you need to know about registering to vote in the Irish presidential election

Any Irish citizen who is over 18 and permanently living in the country is eligible to vote

Every seven years, the people of Ireland are asked to elect a new president.

The president’s position is largely ceremonial, but they play an important role as head of state, representing the country at home and abroad.

With current President Michael D. Higgins’ two-term spell in Áras an Uachtaráin coming to an end, this year’s presidential election will take place on Friday, October 24.

Any Irish citizen who is over 18 and permanently living in the country is eligible to vote.

In most cases, anyone who already voted in an election will be already registered to vote in this election.

However, there are over 60,000 young people who have turned 18 since last year’s general election, and are eligible to vote for the first time.

If you are one of those people, you must register to vote by Friday, October 7.

To do this, visit checktheregister.ie. There, you will be asked to fill out a form and provide various details such as your name, address and PPS number.

While the vast majority of people will vote in-person, there are certain groups that are eligible to cast a postal vote.

Members of An Garda Síochána, those in prison, on holidays abroad or suffering from illness or injury are just some of the people that can cast their vote via the post.

If you are looking to submit a postal vote, you must register to do so online by Monday, September 29.

Elsewhere, if you have changed your address since you last voted, you are advised to update those details on the ‘Check The Register’ website.

Every registered voter should receive a polling information card by post with details of their local polling station over the coming weeks.

If you are in anyway unsure about your registration status, make sure to visit checktheregister.ie and click ‘Check Your Details’. Remember, your vote is your voice!
