WATCH: Pupils and staff get first look inside Limerick's newest school

A NEW ERA in the educational life of Limerick is under way as a new state-of-the-art school has opened.

Limerick Educate Together Secondary School has officially opened its doors at Towlerton near Ballysimon Road.

Established in 2018, the school has spent its opening few years at Fernbank at the former Salesians college at North Circular Road in the city centre.

Principal Eoin Shinners, pictured below, outside the school, revealed the site was handed over last Wednesday.

Staff worked "into the early hours" of Thursday to welcome the first students that morning.

On that day, three year groups moved in then, with the remaining two moving from the city's northside the following day.

"It's been a challenging few weeks. We've managed to keep the students in school to the best of our ability while at the same time, moving students over to a new campus," he said.

Mr Shinners added: "The building is spectacular. Beyond the facilities, it's just the space and colour of it. The corridor colours are vibrant, dynamic. The building is set up so well in terms of circulation. Students can move freely and are not confined to narrow corridors as they were in Fernbank. There's a beautiful general purpose area on the ground floor, and a wonderful plaza adjacent."

Other features of the school include four classrooms with a multi-sensory room with a soft play area, a practical activity room, six state-of-the-art science labs, an engineering room, a technology room, two woodwork rooms, two art rooms and two  home economic rooms.

On top of this, there's a textile print and embroidery room, a graphics room and three multi-media rooms.

And there's also a support dog, Buddy.

"There isn't a subject we cannot offer in this school," the principal proudly stated.
