THE MUNSTER Rugby team who brought the United Rugby Championship trophy home to Thomond Park have been named the Limerick Persons of the Month.
Graham Rowntree, head coach, and player Calvin Nash, accepted the monthly award at a special presentation at the Clayton Hotel in Limerick city.
The squad were given the honour to mark their first trophy since 2011, when they won the Magners League, now known as the URC.
In May, the team ended their 12-year trophy drought after beating the Stormers 19-14 in an exhilarating match in Cape Town.
Speaking to the Limerick Leader after being awarded the honour, Graham Rowntree said that he and the team are “very proud” of the city they represent, where their home stadium is located.
“We were happy to bring home the trophy to Limerick so this award means a lot to us all”.
When asked if the team had come down from their high after winning the championship over three months ago, the former England international said with a smile “no”.
“We will one day! I keep saying to the lads, it will sink in one day.
“It was a monumental effort from a lot of people.
“Limerick is a very proud sporting city and to be up there with the hurlers as well, bringing home a trophy, we are very proud”.
Following their big win in May, the team returned to Limerick to a jubilant reception from supporters.
More than 9,000 delighted red-clad fans turned out at Thomond Park to welcome the players and backroom team members home.
The victorious squad was introduced to the crowd by former Munster player and Hermitage Green band member, Barry Murphy while The Cranberries hit, Zombie, blasted out over the PA system on the warm summer evening.
Speaking about the upcoming season, the former Leicester Tigers prop said he wanted “more of the same”.
“I am looking forward to seeing the young men that we are pushing through, and the old men that played so well for us last year!
“We have a real depth in our squad that we haven't seen before so I am looking forward to seeing those guys coming through”.
The Limerick Person of the Month award is jointly sponsored by the Limerick Leader, media agency Southern, and the Clayton Hotel.
