IT WAS glitz, glammer, paddy caps and pints at Ireland’s biggest student race day in Limerick on Thursday.
Limerick Racecourse saw approximately 10,000 eager race goers don their finest attire, fake tan and flashy suits for the hotly anticipated day on the racing calendar.
Seven races went to post on the Patrickswell track while music blared from the marquee as some of Ireland’s top DJ’s such as Shane Codd, Marty Guilfoyle and Welshy spun the decks and kept the crowd galloping into the evening.
Showers of rain were expected to open from the heavens but in a surprising turn of events the sun managed to stay shining for the majority of the day.
Booming roars echoed from the stands of Limerick Racecourse as horses galloped around the track - crowd favourite jockey and Tipperary native Rachael Blackmore was among the big winners of the day onboard Crowsatedappletart in the 3:25pm 2 metre handicap hurdle.
Trainer Gordon Elliott had a number of horses running and was victorious in the first two races of the day.
We caught up with local Limerick trainer Charles Byrnes who spoke about the future stars in his stables and his thoughts on Limerick Student Raceday and University of Limerick Equine Science student Libby Sinnott shared her excitement and insights into the equestrian world
