ASKEATON Pool and Leisure Centre was formally reopened on Monday by Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Limerick TD Patrick O’Donovan after extensive works to address recurring flood damage and modernise the building.
Originally opened in 2008, the facility suffered repeated flooding to its plant room due to the River Deel bursting its banks.
Following a comprehensive review, the plant room floor level was raised and all mechanical and electrical systems were replaced, ensuring the centre is now safeguarded for the future.
Funding of €1,265,750 was provided through the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund, with Limerick City and County Council matching the investment to bring total expenditure to approximately €2.8 million.
Works also included upgrades to the pool facilities, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and gym, along with general repairs throughout the building.

New sustainable energy systems have been installed, including air-to-water heating, rooftop solar panels and a biogas-fired heating system.
The project was delivered by Martins Construction Ltd with design services provided by PUNCH Consulting Engineers and Don O’Malley & Partners.
The facility is now operated by Swim Ireland and managed locally by a new team, supporting more than 20 jobs including lifeguards, reception and management staff. Membership and pay-as-you-go options are available.
Mayor of Limerick John Moran said “the reopening demonstrates the importance of investing in accessible, modern community facilities”, while Minister O’Donovan described the project as “an example of successful collaboration between government, the council and the local community.”
Local representatives and community groups welcomed the reopening, describing it as a major boost for the town of Askeaton.
