LIMERICK has a “vibrant array” of events planned this week as National Heritage Week 2025 kicks off.

The celebrations will be taking place from Saturday, August 16 to Sunday, August 24 across the city and county.

A range of free events will be available for locals and visitors alike, from hands-on workshops and nature walks to historical tours, artistic showcases and a street party where you can learn to dance the Walls of Limerick.

Limerick County Council Heritage officer Tom O'Neill, said; “National Heritage Week 2025 in Limerick is a chance to reconnect with our landscapes, our stories, and the skills and traditions that continue to shape our county. From blacksmithing in Cappamore to lace-making in the city and archaeology hands-on workshops, this year's events offer something for everyone.

“This year’s theme, ‘Exploring Our Foundations’, feels especially fitting as we reflect on everything from the stone-carving of our ancestors to the banks of the Ardagh River. Participants can trace the story of biodiversity at Griston Bog or listen to the sweet sound of a newly restored Victorian pipe organ in Doon.

“Heritage Week is not just about looking back. It’s about carrying forward the stories, skills, and a deep respect for the place we call home. I encourage everyone across Limerick to take part, share what you know, and discover something new along.”

On Saturday morning, Limerick City Library will be hosting The Fine Art of Limerick Lace: A Pop-Up Showcase at 10am, while a nature walk will take place in the Barnagh Tunnel at 11am.

On Sunday, August 17, you can dance the Walls of Limerick in Irishtown at 2pm as part of Irishtown Heritage Fest, before learning the basics of blacksmithing at 9am in Cappamore from Monday, August 18 to Thursday, August 21.

Monday features a guided tour of Foynes Architectural Conservation Area & Flying Boat Museum at 2pm, Wednesday has an art class with Kathy Tiernan at 2pm in Croom, and Thursday offers a basket weaving demonstration at 1pm in Croom Civic Centre.
