A NEW RADIO programme on community station WL102FM is bringing poetry and storytelling to the airwaves each Wednesday morning, offering listeners a midweek retreat into the world of imagination and creativity.

The show, titled 'Creatively Speaking', is presented by local volunteer Mary Lavery Carrig and airs weekly after the 11:00am news.

“Creatively Speaking was born out of a need to step away from the relentless tide of daily bad news,” said Mary. “It’s no harm for us to, now and again, take a little time out — to step briefly away from the oppressive nature of it all. A mid-morning, midweek programme that invites listeners into a creative and imaginative space is simply good for the soul. Maybe even a balm for the spirit.”

The programme reflects the dynamic and welcoming atmosphere of the station itself. “It’s really a fabulous place,” Mary said. “The staff are helpful, good-humoured and kind, and there’s such a great variety of people coming and going — all diverse, and all contributing to programmes.”

Creatively Speaking has featured a range of guest poets and storytellers over its first three months, including Anne Donegan, Joe Healy, and Kay Liston. August’s featured poet is John McGrath, who will share his work with listeners in the upcoming episode.

For those unable to catch the show live on Wednesday mornings, episodes of Creatively Speaking are also made available on Spotify, expanding its reach beyond the station’s local FM audience.
